reflection 8

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

Finally, it comes to the last unit 8. The last unit in my critical literacy subject. Furthermore, in this last unit I had produce one assignment titled “culling solution to Macaque ‘explosion’” and also done critique reading 8.1 ‘drugs or guns’. To extent my feeling on this subject, in my last assignment I was given an opportunities to give an opinion and critique others students work. Even though I not perfectly good in producing a good element but in this last assignment I felt like I was a lecturer for critical literacy. And for this experience also make me realize and gained new way of producing 10 elements to polish up my entire mistake.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

There is no difficulty on checking others student worked but I have a problem to understand the elaboration given and the grammatical error done by that student. In the reading 8.1 I learned that this article given is focusing on the issue of the South African government under the leadership of Thebo Mbeki who has to confront with two different serious agendas; the dissemination of drugs or the guns. In detail, the article covers the issues of the antiretroviral drugs for HIV positive pregnant women and the arms deal which the government has to choose for the betterment of the citizens but the text is too long and I need a plenty of time to understand.

Differences between two readings.
There is no differences between both reading and my assignment because both of it required me to produced and essay according to 10 elements in critical literacy. But my last assignment is a new skill by critique others student worked. Nevertheless, from all the reading in unit 1 till 8, I already gained load of new experience in how to think critically

reflection 7

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

Unit 7 is simple unit but has lots of text to read. This unit I was required to produce and evaluate critical writing. This unit has a lot of figure and advises included in the text. The reading that is focused in this unit is ‘Dieting: a waist is a terrible thing to mind’. This topic is quite interesting for everybody because this text teach the reader how to keep their health by the correct way of eating. It vice versa with my cerebration in the first time because I think this text is to teach someone in dieting and in the text also mentioned that the writer condemn on diet product.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

The reading 7.1 is quite lengthy for me to read. It is difficult for people like me who are lazy to read long text and make me bored. There are lots of scientific medical term been used and the figure shows is difficult for to understand because it have lots of number and icon that in my opinion only can be understand by people who care about their diet.

Differences between two readings.

In this unit there is only one reading to be evaluated and it nothing I can compare. This text is critical but yet it is very interesting. This reading told that overweight people as well as the lightweight people can’t be so sure that they are healthy because a healthy person comes from a healthy life. Moreover, the advices and example included to proved that diet is not the best way to do by famous person and specialist is very motivating me, it is because I can easily trusted someone when it have an evidence.

reflection 6

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

Overall, I had learned every element in unit 1 till unit 5. When it comes to unit 6, I used all the elements that had been thought by madam Syaripah and it the way for me to show my ability and how excellent my skills in mastering critical literacy. In unit 6, they is one background reading 6.1 ‘Invasion of the baby snatchers’. We need to approach the text using the 10 elements that we have learned and present it in the class like as usual thing we do in the class inn Thursday. This practice is called critical response. It also exactly same like my second assignment, which the article is on gay relationships.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

For my second assignment ‘are gay relationships different’, I was practicing my skills on 10 elements in critical literacy. This article is not difficult at all but I have some problem to understand the story just because the article is too lengthy and has lots of confession from gay couple and it make me confused to locate whose said all the word and who story been telling in the article.

Differences between two readings.

The differences between these two readings are basically the topic. Both of the articles have a serious topic, child abductions and gay relationships are the main ideas for those readings. Furthermore, I also can gain my information and knowledge on this serious matter. On the other words, I don’t have any difficulty on doing this unit.

reflection 5

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

After one and continued to another unit, now it come to unit 5. In this unit I been exposed how to know, detect and predict the audience and impact to the readers. For me, this unit is the interesting among others unit. It is because when I learned all the reading and the portfolio task it was simple predicted by me the impact and who’s the audience for every sort of text. There are four readings in this unit which are ‘Types of exposition’, ‘Metaphor’, ‘Australia methadone madness’ and ‘Out of puff’. The article that we need to approach is ‘Out of puff’. And each of the readings has different type of quality and each reading was very interesting.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

The part in this topic which I can say quite hard is when we did the reading ‘Types of exposition’. In this reading, all the terminologies needed me to read twice and more to get the exact meanings the writer want to tell. For illustration, the analytical and hortatory exposition sometimes make me confused and I have to repeated back to undoubtedly understand it. Others than that, on the reading ‘Metaphor’, it is also difficult to understand but it is quite interesting for me. For example in the subtopic Metaphor I have learned that one word can be described in many ways and have many meaning. For instance when we wrongly used word it can effect on our understandable. It was fun yet challenging to interpret the meaning of the same word in different phrase.

Differences between two readings.

The reading 5.2 ‘out off puff’ is the best way to practice my understandable to predict what is the impact and the target audience for that reading. Furthermore, other reading 5.1, 5.3 and 5.4 is the extra effort for the writer to make me understand and I can polished my skills on this element and also for my critical literacy.

reflection 4

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

As in previous unit before, I have learned and gained more information to make my reading skills better than before. In unit 4, I was been exposed on argument and evidence. Hence, there is not all text or readings have an argument and evidence. For develop my ability on spotting the argument and evidence some reading provided in this unit very helpful for me. There are ‘What is the evidence?’, ‘Statistics’, ‘Crooked and fallacious thinking’ ‘body language that speaks to muggers’ and ‘Burning out at nine?’. This all readings give information how to find argument and evidence in different type of texts. And in my opinion reading title ‘statistic’ is the best way to described and explained in the easier technique to search for an evidence and argument; this is because when we learned by using statistic it is the concept we find a proof by figures and numbers.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

In the practice test reading 4.1 and portfolio task text reading 4.2, it is how I need to read and keep on reading to find the argument or evidence in the text. This text required me to reread the text to find the correct concept. Burning out at nine is the text I repeatedly read to find the argument. This was hard for me for the first time, but when madam Syaripah asks everyone to reread it is the best suggestion to follow.

Differences between two readings.

To differentiate these two readings, I need to keep reads to make it both reading clear. For me reading 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5 is easier than reading 4.1 and 4.2. Because these reading give lots of example and state the correct way to spotted argument and evidence. But there also some terminologies like circular argument, false analogy and equivocation in reading 4.5 is needed me to read more than once to understand it.

reflection 3

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

In unit 3, the rest of the unit will clarify my ability to recognize and identify elements of positioning. This unit I was learnt how to know and understand the writer construct the people in the text. For unit 3 there are practice text 3.1 titled ‘please let me go to your school’ and portfolio 3.2 titled ‘truth about youth’ is the practice for me to make my understanding in positioning better. For reading 3.1 the writer position that scarlet finney is very unfortunate and the writer sympathized her just because she is handicap and don’t have an opportunity to enter the school when the school bring up the reason that they don’t have enough financial to built more facilities to handicap. And in reading 3.2 article is informing the readers especially teenagers in Australia. The writer supports the stance taken by stating the fact of the issues from the survey result. This shows that the writer is trying to be neutral by just stating the result from the article, but he has his own agenda, that is trying to convey the messages that might help the teenagers to overcome the situation

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

For reading 3.3, I was bringing in to develop the linguistic tools and the new elements such as genre, field, tenor, mode, ideology. The writer gives many examples and it makes it easier to understand. But in reading 3.4, the text is too long and it sometimes make me confused even though this text is construct to make people to understand more about this process. It hard for me to cope with the text because I need to think and read repeatedly to identify the meaning of positioning.

Differences between two readings.

For both reading its clearly show that reading 3.1 and 3.2 is easier to understand than 3.3 and 3.4 because I can really understand by only in my first reading due to the simple word usage and the picture also the caption given. The reading 3.1 ‘please let me go to your school’ is the good sample to practice and the best article for every people to understand the positioning.

reflection 2

Reflection 2

What information that in this unit did you find interesting?

In unit 1, I was introduced to the correct way to understand and think critically. After I learned how to understand what is critical literacy is, in unit 2 is more on perspectives. The reading 2.1 battling the bullies is the interesting part in this unit. This article described and focuses on the bully cases that were increase in Australian education institution currently. This article also includes the experiences of one student being bully in his school and he was traumatic and always gave excuses to go to the school. The parent in addition need to be more concern on their children like what Mary Watson had done to help his son from traumatize. Furthermore, school must be more aware on this serious problem instead of doing nothing.

Were any concept/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

The concept that I find difficult is perspective, and this concept still blurred and need to polish up to be better in the future. Background reading 2.2, ‘language, perspective, ideology’ explain the technique to find the perspective. As illustration, the writers compared two local foreign newspapers on the almost exactly same with different approach and bring some difficulty to the reader to understand and find the main point. Background reading 2.3 ‘texts and textualities’ teach how some picture and text can describe the hidden meaning that the writer wants to show. This method makes me confused and I still try to master this technique.

Differences between two readings.

In the ‘battling the bullies’ the writer tell about the bullying cases getting worse day by day in Australia. The purpose of this article is to inform how bad and serious this bully cases and the writer support and strengthen the article by putting the picture of someone been bullied to shows to parent and educational institution to take some action toward this problem. But in the ‘language, perspective, ideology’ the writer want the reader to think more wider, critically and out of a box instead just understand the article.

first reflextion

What information in this unit that you find interesting?

Firstly in this unit all information is interesting because this is the first time I’m learning how to think critically. On the article of ‘convicted killer back at work’ I need to think out of the box. Because we are provided with the article present a picture on a side, this article mentioned that the nurse Deborah Perry is a killer but her face totally contrast with what that her been pictured. This article is for the writer to help the nurse and the writer perspective is she looks this issue in a positive way and she tries to convince the readers that Deborah Parry was not guilty. And this article needs me to think whether Deborah is guilty or not.

Were any concepts/tasks/terminology difficult to understand?

In the topic stories and fact (Martin, J R) we are introduced to know to distinguish what that essay are for instance is it factual or not. Can be trust or it just plagiarize from other. Every topic has difference elaboration on how to understand and differentiate the every type of essays. For example, the swimming club rules (Fowler, Roger and Kress) educate people how to understand whether there is command or reminder. Some of the words are strictly need to beware to avoid from misunderstanding.

Compare the ’convicted killer’ with the way you approached it in the portfolio. Comment on any differences between the two readings?

The article convicted killer is a direct story of a nurse who was convicted killing her own colleague but in the portfolio we need to criticize all the detail and critically give our own opinion toward the article. The differences that been point out is how to write properly because every writing that we produce should consider on every aspect to prevent from any misinterpretation. Furthermore, the reading usage of language and examples manage to make people easy to understand. And this is the lesson that I might be using on my future essays.
